Drink lots of water, be gentle when you wipe (use wet Charmin wipes for extra softness), eat foods high in fiber, use Prep H cream, and don't scratch it if it itches!
Yes it is safe. I have hemorrhoids and they got worse with the strain of pushing during labor. The hospital gave me "Tucs" brand medicated cushions after delivery to make the swelling go down and help with itching/irritation.

Is there anything to do to try and prevent them? I did not have them during pregnancy - I had them after pushing, and after the fear of having a bowel movement post-delivery caused a bit of constipation. I don't think you can get rid of the risk if they are from pushing.
